Today marks the end on an era after the former Meru Senator Julius Muthamia breath his last.
Julius Muthamia, born 1934 was a businessman and former politician who represented Meru in the original Senate of Kenya from its establishment in 1963 until its abolition in 1966; he subsequently served in the Parliament of Kenya, where he was Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development in the government of Daniel arap Moi.
He has also served as the chairman of the traditional Njuri Ncheke council, of the Horticultural Development Authority, and of the Uchumi supermarket chain.

In the video by citizen tv,: “It was a unique handing over ceremony that obviously went unnoticed by many, but as usual Citizen TV captured it. The immediate former Senator of Meru was in high spirits to hand over the senatorial mantle fifty years later to his successor who is none other than Kiraitu Murungi, the Meru senator elect. This is a story of 79 year old Julius Muthamia, one among the few surviving pioneer senators in Kenya. And as Sally Mbilu reports, every senator those days carried with him a nickname, Muthamia’s nickname was Nyang’au.”
