Contract Type: 12 months with possibility of renewal
Reports to: Business Development and Operations Manager, UK
Background: WeFarm is a pioneering, and multi-award winning, start-up social enterprise that already has 9,000 users in Kenya, just a few months after launching.
WeFarm is ‘The internet for people with no internet’: A peer to peer knowledge sharing platform for small-scale farmers located in rural communities in Africa and Latin America addressing anything from farming techniques to business ideas that can improve their lives – then making it available through any device anywhere, even a basic SMS message, and in any language.
WeFarm recently won the Google Impact Challenge, giving us the opportunity to take this incredible enterprise to scale as an innovative social business (https://impactchallenge.withgoogle.com/uk2014).
The Role: This is an incredible opportunity to join an early stage, start-up social enterprise, and to help shape this pioneering business as a key member of the team. We are looking for someone comfortable with the challenges and varied nature of a start-up, and excited about the opportunities for growth, influence and creativity this brings.
You will coordinate and lead WeFarm’s business activities, communications and agricultural community strategy in Kenya and the wider East Africa zone. This role would be an ideal opportunity for someone ambitious and driven looking for a start-up opportunity to grow with an exciting company, or a more experienced person looking to do something more impactful in the social sector with their skills.
Key tasks and responsibilities

  • Implement WeFarm’s communications, PR and marketing strategy in East Africa, including working with local media and radio
  • Business development – support the WeFarm Business Development Manager in coordinating commercial partnerships in Kenya
  • Researching and building commercial partnerships and relationships
  • Working with the WeFarm Africa Manager to attract farmers and farming organizations to join the WeFarm system
  • Supporting WeFarm to grow in Kenya and Tanzania
  • Be a key member of the WeFarm start-up team

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • Excited and motivated by the challenge of being part of working with a start-up trying to change the world
  • A proven track record and experience in the communications and business fields – at least 3 years experience desired
  • Comfortable negotiating and pitching to businesses
  • You will have excellent written and spoken communications skills
  • Tenacious and entrepreneurial, with a can-do approach and committed to going above and beyond the role’s on-paper remit to ensure success
  • Comfortable working hard in a start-up environment – willing to try things, fail fast and learn
  • Passionate about WeFarm’s social model and approach
  • Available to travel reasonably often
  • Fluent English and Kiswahili speaker

What we can offer

  • 96,000 KES per month gross salary package
  • Performance related share options in the company
  • The opportunity to play a lead role and make a significant impact in a small, but very ambitious start-up and grow alongside the business as it fulfills its potential
  • Occasional opportunities for international travel
