Sudan's Omar al-Bashir Arrested in South Africa

A South African court has issued an interim order stopping Sudanese leader Omar al-Bashir, who faces war crimes charges, leaving the country.

The court says President Bashir will have to stay until the court hears an application later on Sunday on whether he should be handed over to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Born on 1 January 1944 in Hoshe Bannaga, Shendi Governorate in the Sudan.

President of the Republic of Sudan since 16 October 1993.

First warrant of arrest issued by Pre-Trial Chamber I: 4 March 2009. Second warrant of arrest issued by Pre-Trial Chamber I: 12 July 2010.

Mr Al Bashir is allegedly criminaly responsible for ten counts on the basis of his individual criminal responsibility under Article 25(3)(a) of the Rome Statute as an indirect (co) perpetrator.
Mr Bashir is in Johannesburg for an African Union (AU) summit.
As the court prepared to hear the case, he posed for a group photo.
Earlier President Bashir was welcomed by South African officials as he arrived in Johannesburg.
However, there are tensions between the ICC and the AU, with some on the continent accusing the court of unfairly targeting Africans. The AU has previously urged the ICC to stop proceedings against sitting leaders.
The warrants against Mr Bashir, who denies the allegations, have severely restricted his overseas travel. A
