The board of Uchumi Supermarkets has sacked Chief Executive Jonathan Ciano over gross misconduct and negligence.
The board has picked General Manager of Operations Owino Ayodo to replace him in an acting capacity.
Speaking at a press briefing at a Nairobi hotel on Monday, the board’s chairwoman, Ms Khadija Mire, said Chief Finance Officer Chadwick Omondi Okumu and the human resources manager, Mr Michael Kibe, have also been suspended.
According to Ms Mire, the retail chain owes its retailers more than Sh1 billion and is looking to sell its non-core assets worth over Sh2 billion to meet the company’s obligations.
